Eighth graders in the “Saw and Serve” Field Middle School Service Learning are putting the wood working skills they learned to good use by creating and donating projects they made. The class is taught by Dave Kondela, Applied Technology teacher.
Students created a colorful array of wooden toys to donate to the "My Stuff Bags Foundation" of California for children who are placed in foster care on an emergency basis in many parts of the country. The students sanded wooden shapes of cars, animals and dinosaurs, painted them in a variety of colors and themes, and fitted them with wheels and axels. A second project involved creating wooden storage bins for a suburban preschool in Mundelein. Students drilled holes, assembled, sanded, primed, painted and decorated the wooden boxes to organize markers, crayons and art supplies.
Two projects are being donated within District 31. Students assembled, sanded and painted wooden ramps for use in Field School’s eighth grade physics class. The 2 foot by 5 inch ramps will be used for experiments with marbles and cars in teaching physics concepts.
Decorative District 31-themed wooden trains with cars labeled Field Middle School and Winkelman School were also made to donate to the District 31 Education Foundation Winter Benefit’s silent auction coming up on February 5, 2011.
